About
Open Concert Journal is about the practical craft of making music in company. It is for players, conductors and curious listeners who want to understand how ensembles prepare, coordinate and shape a performance.
The work between rehearsals
We cover choosing and balancing parts, reading a score, planning a rehearsal and listening across an ensemble. Each subject begins with a real musical task: find a clear entrance, agree on a pulse, or decide what to work on next. The aim is to offer ideas a group can discuss and try, not rules for every piece or player.
A useful point of view
Music-making is collaborative, and the same passage can call for different solutions. We explain terms where they help, separate observation from opinion and make room for differences in instruments, experience and musical tradition. Readers need no specialist credentials to follow along.
Good playing starts with good attention
Ensemble music depends on small acts of coordination. We look at choices players can try, hear and discuss at the next rehearsal.
